WENTWORTH & FOSO THURSDAY 9TH JULY
We start our day with a visit to the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens just outside Mildura. We are taken on a guided tractor train tour of the gardens before morning tea. Our next visit is to Orange World - a working 50-acre citrus property situated just 8 minutes from Mildura over the Chaffey Bridge. Enjoy a citrus tour around the picturesque property of avocado trees, numerous citrus varieties and tree grafting areas. There is also an opportunity to travel on the 70-seat tractor train with undercover seating for an informative commentary on a wealth of citrus information with a juicy sense of humour. Following our tour, we head to Wentworth for some time at leisure to purchase lunch. In the afternoon enjoy some sightseeing of the township before returning to Mildura. After dinner in the motel, we head back to Wentworth to experience the awesome Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra (FOSO) installation with the Perry Sandhills as a backdrop. The arrangement features 80 Hills Hoist clothes lines that look like an orchestra pit, complete with a dazzling display of colours and sounds. Each clothes line is lit up with fibre optic lights that represent different musical instruments, turning it into a symphonic visual and audio feast you won’t want to miss. After a night of fun we'll make our way back to our accommodation.
DAY 3
MILDURA & TRAIL OF LIGHTS FRIDAY 10TH JULY
This morning, we visit Woodsies Gem Shop. It’s Australia’s largest gemstone cutting and jewellery manufacturing complex. It’s a fascinating place where we can browse through the collection of fossils and the huge range of jewellery and crystals. Next, we head to Varapodio Estate, a family owned and operated Olive Grove. We enjoy a talk on their farm as well as tastings of their award-winning oils, before lunch here. This afternoon we head back to the hotel to unwind for a couple of hours before our dinner. Tonight, we are in for a special treat! Making its home on the western banks of Lake Cullulleraine, Bruce Munro’s Trail of Lights is a transcendent experience, allowing connection with both the artwork and the natural environment. Through the interplay of 12,500 firefly lights, Gone Fishing sculptures and the natural landscape, Munro invites contemplation and reflection, creating a space for introspection and wonder. As night falls, this spectacle will turn Lock Island into a must-visit magical experience.
DAY 4
MORE OF MILDURA SATURDAY 11TH JULY
After breakfast, we enjoy some sightseeing and listen to stories about the Chaffey Brothers who arrived in Mildura in 1886. Their goal was to establish the first irrigation scheme in Australia. Following the success of early irrigation development work William Chaffey began construction of Rio Vista in 1889 – our next stop. The Spanish name Rio Vista (River View) is now the home of the Mildura Arts Centre and Historical Museum.Restored to its original condition the mansion features antique filled rooms of the 1890s, beautifully restored woodwork, exquisite hand painted stained-glass windows and door panelling. We enjoy lunch at The Mildura Boathouse before a unique experience aboard the PV Rothbury, cruising along the river and passing through Lock 11, which was built to bypass the weir across the river. It's a chance to take in the stunning river views in the afternoon. After a great experience we return to our hotel and meet again over dinner.
