DAY 3
AMEDEE ISLAND FRIDAY 9TH OCTOBER
We depart our hotel after an early breakfast and take a 40-minute ferry crossing to Amédée Island, where we have time to explore everything the island has to offer. This small island is only 400 metres long and 270 metres wide. We begin with a visit to the Amédée Lighthouse. In 1861, due to the many shipwrecks occurring as vessels entered the lagoon, Paris ordered the construction of a lighthouse for Nouméa. Work began in 1862 under the direction of Mr Rigolet, a French engineer from the Eiffel Tower workshops in Paris. After ten months of intense work by military personnel and local workers, the lighthouse was erected on Amédée Island. It was first illuminated on 15 November 1865, the saint’s day of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. Its light marks the entrance to the Boulari Passage, one of only three natural passages through the coral reef surrounding New Caledonia. Included in our days outing is a Glass Bottom Boat trip, buffet lunch, cultural dance show and demonstrations of Coconut grafting and Sarong tying. The Lighthouse is open for anyone wanting to climb to the top, but there are many stairs and there is an extra cost for entry. Our cruise returns at 4.30pm and we return to our hotel for dinner.

DAY 6
BOURAIL & FORT TEREMBA MONDAY 12TH OCTOBER
Today we depart Nouméa for a full day of sightseeing to the north and east of the island. Our first stop is Bourail, located on the western coast of New Caledonia and home to the New Zealand War Cemetery. The cemetery was constructed by New Zealand authorities for the burial of members of New Zealand and other Allied forces who died in this region during World War II. The remains of approximately 200 casualties were relocated here from 14 other islands across the South Pacific. We then visit the Bourail Museum before travelling on to Moindou this afternoon for a visit to Fort Téremba. This historic site was formerly a jail and the headquarters of the French army, overlooking the sea and extending across 11 hectares. During the penal era, convicts were granted plots of land to re-settle in New Caledonia depending on their sentence or conduct, often at the expense of the Melanesian population. Growing resentment led to the Kanak revolt of 1878, led by the legendary chief Atai. Fort Téremba came under siege during the uprising but was never taken, and the site was later reinforced with the construction of a fort within the penal colony. This history is explored through the permanent exhibition now housed inside the fort. We spend time exploring the fort and its surrounding grounds before returning to our hotel.
Dinner this evening is at the Marmite & Tire-Bouchon Restaurant, which offers a gastronomic French dining experience featuring dishes that blend traditional techniques with local ingredients.
DAY 7
NOUMEA SIGHTSEEING TUESDAY 13TH OCTOBER
Our local guide joins us this morning for some further sightseeing and touring around Nouméa with visits to Maison de la Perle and the lookout at Ouen Toro. For something unique we visit one of the largest supermarkets in Nouméa to see the huge range of cheese, bakery items and smallgoods, before arriving at Lemon Bay in time to purchase lunch. Lemon Bay is known for its calm waters and lounging in the shade under the large banyam trees that surround it. It’s a favourite spot for the locals to come to enjoy a wine, take a walk while enjoying a tasty ice cream or just to relax on the beach. Our afternoon visit is to the Nouméa Aquarium - Aquarium des Lagons Nouvelle Caledonie. With its multiple different tanks, you can admire a collection of phosphorescent corals unique in the world. The aquarium also boasts a garden featuring a turtle pool. When we return to our hotel, we’ll have time for some last-minute shopping or to relax. This evening, we take a short walk to Le Roof Restaurant that is situated looking out toward Anse Vata Bay. This will be a wonderful location for our farewell dinner.
